April 08 comp - By Dan

The Apollo Bay Board Riders have just had their second comp for the year at Skeney’s. There was a solid swell coming through with cross shore winds. If you were lucky enough to get the right wave you could go all the way to the shore! First up was the men’s for a change. Baz got heaps of waves in the first heat and the others were not quite lucky enough to find the magic spot. It’s clear that Baz is following in Kelly’s footsteps with two consecutive wins this year.

Mens

1st – Baz
2nd - Ben
3rd - Bags

Next for the under 12 boys and girls. Both age groups were surfing really well. For some reason there was only three U/12 boys, which meant places for all! They all decided to surf the inside waves. The under 12 boys got some screamers (Darcy, like his dad got heaps) as well as the girls.

Boys U/12:

1st – Darcy
2nd–Ned
3rd-Declan

Girls U/12:

1st – Stephani
2nd - Lily

This also had only three competitors, thanks to Oscar, Cody and Nick who had other engagements! So Will, Dion and Dan scored some extra points.

U/16 Boys

First – Will
Second – Dion
Third – Dan

This was the last event for the day. Rachel, Jeanine and Ella all decided to paddle out the back, but this only paid off for Rachel, who got some great rides. Sitting on the inside was Anna, Liz, Grace who also got a few rides. At one stage the commentator ‘DARCY’ who couldn’t stop talking or contain his excitement invited Declan up to the microphone. Declan’s job was to score the wipeouts – you could tell how high the score was by how evil his laugh was. In the in end Jeanine won by far! Well done …

Open Women’s

First – Rachel
Second – Liz
Third – Anna

Quiksilver State titles

Last weekend – the Lalors, Ben and Darcy Day, Matt and Daniel Armstrong headed to Philip Island to compete in the State title. The spot we surfed was a spot called Woolamai – the conditions weren’t that great, but it was still fun. In the first heat was Daniel, and coz he didn’t go to the first competition he had to compete in the trials, where he just didn’t get through the U/16s. Next up was Darcy who easily got through, followed by Luke who was successful with some ripper back hand snaps. In the end it was down to a final with Luke, Darcy and two others. The end results were Darcy 4th and Luke 3rd. In the end it was a great experience for everyone and are now looking forward to the next one in May at Jan Juc.

During the week there was a request for Sunday comps. The committee met on Monday and decided to stick with calender for this year, and next year try and work in with footy and netball draws.

Lots of Love…The Committee

CATE THOMAS! is not only right on all questions, but she has backed it up with a level detail and a
knowledge of surfing history that is truly impressive. I thought the Tom Blake reference was good…
but the Wil Jobson one was out there. Scary thing is it all checks out. Well done.
